Everyone loves a good road trip. The memories you make and the experiences you have are indescribable. Sometimes, however, getting there is half the battle. Road trips can be adventurous but they can also be time-consuming and lots of work beforehand.
Just like anything else in life, if you are organized and have a few good tips to pave the way before you go, there are a few less bumps in the road.
1. Saving money – whether you are traveling by plane, by boat or by automobile you always want to save some money. One great thing about having your own car is that you can bring as much or as little as you like. Bringing along some food that will stay fresh is a great way to save some dough. Start with snacks and beverages. Have you ever noticed how much money a snack is at a roadside stop? Sometimes a bottle of water or a snack is double the price than if you were to buy it at the local supermarket. Bringing a six pack of water and some favorite snacks will not only save money, but will save time as well. Sandwiches and granola bars are perfect for road trips. Pack a picnic for a stop along the road.
2. Get an EZ pass if you don’t already have one – EZ pass can save you time waiting on line for the person in front of you to give and get exact change. The EZ pass express lane is worth its weight in gold. You’ll be able to sail right through on your journey
3. Don’t always count on your GPS – while a GPS is an excellent tool, they can sometimes take you down the beaten path or the road not traveled. GPS units are often hard-wired with a map that becomes outdated over time as roadways change. Don’t be afraid to look at and use a map before you go. Bring one along for the ride.
4. Know what direction you are headed – no joke; knowing what direction (southeast or northwest, etc.) you are heading will save you many headaches. If you get lost or veer off the beaten path, knowing your direction can save the day.
5. Stop along the way – one of the best things about a road trip is the unexpected adventures you get to create. If you see a sign for something unusual like a museum or a panoramic view – remember this is one of those situations where it really is all about the journey, not the destination.
6. Have your music ready – what’s a good road trip without songs to associate it with? Have plenty of music along for the ride.
7. Be open to experience the unexpected – this is one of the best road trip tips you can give yourself. Try not to stay too rigid about where you are traveling and be open to spontaneous adventure along the way – lunch at a barn-style restaurant, music in the park that you never thought you’d enjoy, or simply being in awe of a majestic view.
8. Car maintenance – sometimes when planning an extensive road trip, it’s so easy (and not uncommon) to forget the common sense maintenance items – air in your tires, no excess baggage in your trunk, oil change, fluids, inspection and registration that are up-to-date. If you have ever been stopped due to an expired inspection, you’re not alone.
9. Miscellaneous extras – if you have a spare pair of eyeglasses, bring them; and even better yet, a spare key for a friend to hold is a wise idea; some extra cash in a jacket pocket; blankets for the car; a first aid kit and some plastic bags. You’d be surprised at how many uses a plastic bag has – for wet bathing suits, for garbage, for ice, for dirty clothing.
If you are a true lover of road trips, then you already know that it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. A road trip well planned is a road trip worth remembering.
